OpenAI generated $10 billion in revenue for Microsoft in the quarter ended Sept. 30, about 11 percent of the Redmond company's total, GeekWire reported from Wednesday's filing. In the fiscal year ended in June, Microsoft recorded $24.1 billion from its OpenAI business, or about $6 billion a quarter on average. The $10 billion is larger than Xbox, at $5.4 billion in the quarter, and larger than search and advertising including Bing, at $6.6 billion.

The total covers revenue-sharing payments from OpenAI and other business between the companies, including OpenAI's use of Azure. Microsoft did not say how much came from each, or how much of Azure's 48 percent growth came from OpenAI. Microsoft has begun disclosing the OpenAI line because of its size.
