NDP Leader David Eby signed a public health-care guarantee at a Thanksgiving Monday news conference, promising to protect B.C.'s public system and oppose what he described as the privatized model being introduced in Alberta, CityNews Vancouver reports.
The BC Conservatives say they are committed to keeping the system universal and publicly funded, and accused Eby of fearmongering. Interim leader Lorne Doerkson has been openly critical of the current system, pointing to repeated hospital closures in Merritt.
The BC Greens said they oppose any privatization, and noted that the NDP government has paid private nursing agencies to cover shortages.
