The B.C. Court of Appeal has granted an interim injunction that halts demolition of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre until at least Nov. 3, CBC News reports. The city and Park Board must stop interior work being done to prepare the building for demolition.

The group Protecting Our Vancouver Aquatic Centre and its director, Park Board candidate Jon Girard, argued that a delay until after the Oct. 17 municipal election would give voters a say. A new Park Board could reverse the previous board's approval of a 25-metre pool design.

The rebuild became contentious after a promised 50-metre pool was cut to half that length. Justice Gail Dickson accepted that the appellants would suffer irreparable harm if demolition continued, despite city arguments that delay will raise costs. The group's appeal of a lower-court ruling has not yet been scheduled.
