Prime Minister Mark Carney used his Thanksgiving message to call for national unity, a week before Albertans vote in a referendum on separation, Al Jazeera reports.
The Oct. 19 vote is non-binding. It asks whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the constitutional process to hold a binding referendum on separating.
The push has been driven by long-standing grievances over federal energy and environmental policy. Polls suggest most Albertans oppose independence. The vote follows the Parti Québécois winning the most seats in Quebec's election last week.
