Apple on Monday announced a new iPad mini with a larger 8.5-inch OLED display, TechCrunch reported. The tablet is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, 5.4 millimetres thick, and runs an A20 Pro chip. It starts at $699 for Wi-Fi and $849 for Wi-Fi and cellular, and comes in two colours.

Apple said peak brightness reaches 1,200 nits, more than twice the previous model, with full-screen brightness of 600 nits and a 2,000,000-to-1 contrast ratio. A nano-texture glass option, already offered on iPad Pro, reduces glare. The update adds a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera, faster wireless and cellular connections, and fast charging. The Super Retina XDR display uses OLED for pixel-level lighting, P3 colour, and what Apple calls an Acoustic Display for games, video and editing.

The announcement came days before an Apple event called Pro and Tell, scheduled for Wednesday.
