Anthropic said on Sunday it is creating a public benefit fund, structured as a wholly owned entity within the company, and will commit 5% of its shares to it. The San Francisco company has the option to contribute another 2% for every 50% increase in its value.

Anthropic said the fund could make large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. It has already committed $200 million to study AI’s effect on jobs, but said that “given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed.”

The announcement comes as the AI industry faces growing public scepticism, which CEO Dario Amodei has called “fundamentally a crisis of trust.” The company said it will share more about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
