Bellevue traffic-data pioneer Inrix agrees to sell its assets to Allstate's Arity

The 2004 Microsoft spinout, which twice prepared for an IPO, would end a 22-year run as an independent company when the deal closes later this year.

Inrix, the Bellevue, Wash.-based traffic data company that spun out of Microsoft in 2004, has agreed to sell substantially all of its assets to Arity, the mobility data subsidiary of insurer Allstate, GeekWire reported on Friday. Terms were not disclosed, and the companies expect the deal to close later this year.

Chicago-based Arity, founded in 2016, analyzes driving behaviour for insurers, marketers and public-sector customers and says it has gathered more than 3 trillion miles of driving data. “By combining Arity’s predictive insights on driving behavior and risk with Inrix’s transportation intelligence and mobility analytics, we will be uniquely positioned to deliver more robust intelligence and insights into how people, vehicles, goods, and roads interact,” Arity president Gary Hallgren said in a statement.

Inrix raised more than $288 million over its life and twice prepared to go public: it hired Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase in 2012 with an eye toward a 2013 IPO, and looked to go public again in 2022 before backing out amid economic uncertainty. “We were about two weeks away from filing our documents with the SEC,” CEO Bryan Mistele told GeekWire in August 2022. Its customers include Amazon, IBM, General Motors, Windermere Real Estate and state transportation departments, and it has moved from selling raw traffic data toward subscription software for traffic-signal timing, road safety and retail site selection.

Arity’s data practices have drawn legal scrutiny. Texas sued Allstate and Arity in January 2025, alleging they collected and sold drivers’ location data without adequate consent; responding to a separate privacy lawsuit in March, Allstate told Reuters that users receive clear notice and explicitly opt in to sharing their driving data. Inrix has about 277 employees according to LinkedIn data, and the companies did not say whether all of them would remain or whether Inrix would keep its Bellevue headquarters.
