Vancouver-based Eldorado Gold said on Friday that the European Commission has named its Skouries copper-gold mine in northern Greece a Strategic Project under the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act, Business Examiner reported.

The Commission approved a second list of 46 strategic projects the same day, chosen from 102 applications across 16 member states.

Eldorado describes Skouries, in the Halkidiki region, as a project of more than $2 billion with an expected mine life of about 20 years. CEO Christian Milau said it is one of the largest new copper-gold mines in Europe.

The company produced its first copper-gold concentrate at the site on Sept. 8, and the mine connected permanently to Greece's grid on Sept. 28, according to the report.
