The Financial Times reported the earlier figure came from investors trying to compare OpenAI with Anthropic.

OpenAI has told investors its annualized revenue is "approaching $50 billion," about $20 billion less than a figure of nearly $70 billion reported a little over a week earlier, the Financial Times reported, according to TechCrunch on Thursday.

The $70 billion figure was based on information shared with OpenAI investors and came from "attempts by OpenAI's own investors to produce a direct comparison with Anthropic's annualised revenues," according to the FT. OpenAI and Anthropic calculate annualized revenue differently, with Anthropic counting sales made by its cloud partners.

OpenAI raised $122 billion in a March funding round, TechCrunch noted. Its IPO, previously rumoured for this year, has been pushed to early 2027.

TechCrunch said it had contacted OpenAI for comment.
