Ring unveils its first smart lock, a $249 deadbolt with no keyhole and a hand-crank dial
Twisting the dial five to 10 times revives a dead battery; the lock ships in the first quarter of 2027 with no subscription required.

Amazon-owned Ring on Wednesday announced its first smart lock, a $249 deadbolt with no keyhole and a dial that recharges a dead battery by hand.
Founder and chief inventor Jamie Siminoff said the dial solves the problem that has held smart locks back: owners can be locked out when the battery dies, which is why most still ship with a key. Turning the dial roughly five to 10 times generates enough power to wake the lock, which then opens with a fingerprint, the keypad or the Ring app.
The lock runs on a standard Ring battery pack expected to last about a year, connects through Amazon Sidewalk, works with Alexa and needs no subscription for any feature. It is due to ship in the first quarter of next year. Siminoff said he worked out the design at night using Amazon's AI tools before handing it to Ring's engineers.
Ring also introduced five cameras, including the $149.99 Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, the $219.99 Floodlight Cam 4K Plus, the $99.99 Indoor Cam 4K and the $69.99 Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam 2K. The two indoor models went on sale Wednesday in the U.S.
