Shipping giant NYK opens Silicon Valley office to scout AI and logistics technology
The Sunnyvale branch will test startup technologies through proof-of-concept projects, partnerships and equity investments.

NYK Group Americas is opening a Silicon Valley branch in Sunnyvale, Calif., in October to identify emerging technologies and business models it could test across its shipping and logistics operations, Digital Ship reported on Sunday.
The office will connect the Japanese shipping group with startups, investors and research institutions working in AI, digital technology, energy and decarbonization. NYK plans to assess technologies through proof-of-concept projects, partnerships and equity investments before wider commercial use across its fleet, logistics network and customers.
"By opening the Silicon Valley branch, we will be better positioned to identify these developments at an early stage and build relationships with startups, investors, research institutions," said Yutaka Ikeda, CEO of NYK Group Americas.
For Pacific trade operators, including those serving B.C. ports, the move shows carriers putting staff closer to the startups building fleet and logistics software.
