OpenAI gives developers six months' notice to retire gpt-5.1 and two other API models
gpt-5.1, gpt-5.3-codex and gpt-5.4-nano will be removed from the API on April 1, 2027.

OpenAI has set a shutdown date of April 1, 2027 for three API models, gpt-5.1, gpt-5.3-codex and gpt-5.4-nano, in a deprecation notice dated Oct. 1, MIXED Reality News reported on Saturday.
OpenAI points both gpt-5.1 and gpt-5.3-codex to gpt-6-sol as the recommended replacement, and gpt-5.4-nano to gpt-6-luna. The six-month notice matches the floor OpenAI sets for generally available models, the publication noted, after the company gave gpt-5.4-cyber about 20 days' notice in September.
The changes affect API model IDs used from developers' own code, services and plugins, not ChatGPT's model picker. OpenAI's v1/prompts API and reusable prompt objects, Agent Builder and the Evals platform are scheduled to shut down on Nov. 30, 2026, according to the report.
Teams building on these models now have a fixed migration deadline to plan around.
