B.C. Greens propose province-wide moratorium on AI data centres
The party's AI and technology platform also calls for an independent oversight commission and a pause on AI in K-12 classrooms.

The B.C. Greens are proposing a province-wide moratorium on artificial intelligence data centres and new safeguards for AI use in schools, workplaces and online platforms, the Surrey Now-Leader reported on Friday.
Party leader Emily Lowan announced the proposals in Victoria. The moratorium would pause construction and operation of AI data centres until a public-interest audit is completed and a regulatory framework is in place. "We are concerned about these stranded assets, and most immediately we are concerned about the impact to our hydro system," Lowan said.
The platform calls for an independent AI oversight commission developed with the federal government, a moratorium on AI use in kindergarten to Grade 12 classrooms while guidelines are developed, and a requirement that social media platforms let users opt out of algorithmically curated feeds.
It also proposes legislation within a Green government's first 100 days to ban surveillance pricing, where retailers use personal data to set individual prices, and a ban on AI-powered worker surveillance at job sites.
Election day in B.C. is Oct. 24.
