Moment Energy co-founder and chief product officer Gurmesh Sidhu told the Energy Disruptors: UNITE 2026 conference in Calgary that retired electric-vehicle batteries could help power data centres and other AI infrastructure, Techcouver reported on Thursday.

Sidhu said there are more than 160 million EVs worldwide, representing about 4,900 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity that will eventually reach the end of its automotive life, roughly 17 times global demand for grid-scale battery storage in 2025. "These batteries can last over a decade in the field," he said.

In June, Vancouver-founded Moment opened Megafactory 1 in Surrey, which it describes as the world's largest EV battery repurposing facility, turning retired batteries into storage systems for data centres, hospitals, factories and microgrids. The company is targeting one gigawatt-hour of annual production capacity by 2030 and is building another megafactory in Texas.

Moment's Series B financing of $40 million brought its total funding to more than $100 million. The company has partnerships with Mercedes-Benz Energy and Nissan North America and signed an agreement with Simon Fraser University earlier this year to explore storage for AI, quantum computing and data-centre infrastructure.
