The federal government faces a Thursday deadline to decide whether to designate a proposed $44-billion oil pipeline from Alberta to B.C., with a marine export tanker terminal at Roberts Bank in Delta, for fast-tracked approval, the Vancouver Sun reported on Tuesday.

If approved for the fast track, construction could begin as early as fall 2027, the paper reported.

The decision follows Prime Minister Mark Carney's $1.2-billion ocean-protection announcement in North Vancouver, which the government framed as support for expanding major projects on the coast.

For Lower Mainland contractors, engineering firms and port suppliers, the designation would signal a long pipeline of work; for coastal communities, it reopens debate over tanker traffic.
