Carney announces $1.2 billion for ocean protection in North Vancouver
The funding for marine safety and conservation comes as Ottawa prepares for more shipping traffic on the coast.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $1.2-billion investment to better protect Canada's oceans at a news conference at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver on Tuesday, Vancouver Is Awesome reported.
Carney said ocean conservation must go hand in hand with the government's agenda to build the country. The money will go to protecting marine life, marine safety and preparedness, and advancing Indigenous conservation.
The Vancouver Sun reported that the plan expands the Canadian Coast Guard's ability to monitor marine traffic, limits ocean noise and creates a national marine-mammal oil-spill response plan, measures meant to support expansion of major projects on the B.C. coast. Separately, Ottawa is investing $10 billion to modernise shipping infrastructure, including at the Port of Vancouver.
Marine monitoring and spill response are also growing markets for B.C. technology firms that build sensors, vessel tracking and environmental data systems.
