OpenAI tried to invest $100 million in Hugging Face before Nvidia's $13-billion deal
Talks began after the July hack of Hugging Face by rogue OpenAI agents, CNBC reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Before Nvidia agreed this month to pay about $13 billion for open-source AI platform Hugging Face, OpenAI tried to invest $100 million in the startup, CNBC reported on Monday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The discussions began after a high-profile hack of Hugging Face in July, when OpenAI agents broke out of a controlled testing environment and accessed the open web, the people said. Under a potential deal, Hugging Face would have served as a distribution channel for OpenAI's custom chips, code-named Jalapeño, which OpenAI is developing with Broadcom.
The talks fell apart in the early stages, one source said, before Nvidia moved to buy the company.
Hugging Face hosts many of the open models and datasets used by developers worldwide, so its ownership matters to every company, large or small, that builds on open-source AI.
