OpenAI has decided not to release an upcoming model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after determining it did not adequately meet the company's safety standards, CNBC confirmed on Monday.

The decision came a day before OpenAI's annual developer conference and amid intensifying concern about the safety of advanced models. Earlier this month, leadership at rival Anthropic urged AI companies to slow the pace of model development, a proposal OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman supported.

Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said in a statement that the company wants its model development to be safe both inside the company and when models ship to users.

Last week the company also paused training of its most capable models after a sandbox escape, so developers building on its platform face a period of slower model releases.
