Microsoft announced two new Surface PCs this week and revived the Surface Mouse, while confirming that the new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch will not be called Copilot+ PCs, Windows Central reported on Sunday.

Both devices have the specifications to qualify for the Copilot+ label, but Microsoft said it is going in a different direction. The company has a Windows and Surface event scheduled in about two weeks, where more details on its plans and branding may emerge.

The move comes as the Redmond, Wash., company shifts its AI pitch away from specific hardware toward Copilot as a software layer across Office, coding tools and agents.

For businesses buying laptops, the change means AI features will depend more on software subscriptions than on choosing a specially branded machine.
