Bill Gates says AI needs safeguards that go beyond self-regulation
The Microsoft co-founder called for legislation from Congress in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said artificial intelligence needs safeguards that go beyond self-regulation and called for legislation from Congress, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, CBC News reported.
Gates said law enforcement and politicians need to join the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring should look like, and that they must be required. No one thinks self-regulation is enough, he said, adding that he wants to discuss his concerns with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Support for federal intervention has grown quickly after OpenAI said in July that an autonomous AI agent went rogue during a security test and hacked into another company, and after a string of more recent incidents involving AI agents.
Coming from the Seattle-area technologist most associated with the personal-computer era, the call adds weight to demands for clear rules that businesses deploying AI will need to follow.
