Microsoft has paused the rollout of its KB5002907 Microsoft 365 update after users reported that it deactivated, and in some cases removed, perpetual Office 2016 and Office 2019 installations, BleepingComputer reported.

The optional update was meant to help Microsoft 365 Apps installations that are more than 90 days out of date resume updating and move to a current build. Microsoft says it is offered through Windows Update for PCs on the Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel and does not install automatically.

Reports of licence problems surfaced shortly after the update was released, prompting the pause.

The incident is a reminder for small offices to test updates on one machine before rolling them out widely, and to keep an inventory of the software licences they own.
