BC Hydro opens Esquimalt's first EV fast-charging site, with room for six vehicles at once
Three 180-kilowatt chargers at the Archie Browning Sports Centre use power sharing to serve two cars each.

BC Hydro opened its first electric vehicle fast-charging site in Esquimalt on Friday, in the parking lot of the Archie Browning Sports Centre at 1151 Esquimalt Road.
The site has three 180-kilowatt chargers that can serve up to six vehicles at the same time. The units use power-sharing technology, splitting output between two vehicles, so a single 180-kilowatt charger can deliver 90 kilowatts to each of two cars. BC Hydro says the chargers can add up to 180 kilometres of range to an average electric vehicle in about 10 minutes.
The chargers carry CCS, CHAdeMO and NACS connectors, covering most electric models on the road, and the site joins BC Hydro's public charging network on southern Vancouver Island.
Power sharing is a small example of the software now built into charging hardware: load management, payments and uptime monitoring are increasingly handled by connected systems rather than by the hardware alone.
