Paul St-Pierre Plamondon's Parti Québécois grew from three seats in 2022 to 59 in the Oct. 5 election, five short of a majority, CBC News reports. The Liberals won 40, the Conservatives 19 and Québec solidaire nine.

The Coalition Avenir Québec, which won a large majority four years ago, did not win a seat, and leader Christine Fréchette lost her riding.

St-Pierre Plamondon has said he would delay a sovereignty referendum until 2029 or 2030, after U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office. A minority government would need support from other parties to hold one.
