Vancouver-based Telus and AST SpaceMobile have completed their first integration test linking Telus's wireless network with AST's satellites in low Earth orbit, the companies announced.
The technology is designed to let ordinary smartphones get data, calls and texts where there are no cell towers, including highways, parks and remote work sites, and to provide another way to reach 911.
Telus says the service is expected to be available to customers within the next year.
