Canada's greenhouse gas emissions rose by about one per cent in 2025 to 691 million tonnes, according to early estimates from the Canadian Climate Institute reported by The Canadian Press.

Oil and gas emissions fell 0.2 per cent despite record crude production, largely because of lower methane emissions. Buildings, during a colder winter, and higher natural gas use for electricity drove the overall increase.

The institute puts emissions 9.5 per cent below 2005 levels, far from the 2030 target of 40 to 45 per cent. Ottawa's own 2025 figures are due in April.
