PAGE 01

The first ride

The twin buses arrived before the carnival gates opened. Straight ahead stood the Moonbeam Carousel. Impatience pointed to the silver rocket horse. “FIRST RIDE!” Patience laughed. “Let us get in line.”

ART: Dawn carnival. Rocket horse is visible across the square. Twin buses anchor the franchise.
PAGE 02

Clunk

Just as the gates opened—CLUNK! The carousel stopped. A mechanic raised a red flag. “Nobody rides until I finish the safety check.” Impatience groaned so loudly that three pigeons flew away.

ART: Funny pigeon reaction; mechanic clearly uses red safety flag.
PAGE 03

How long?

“How long?” asked Impatience. “I do not know yet,” said the mechanic. Impatience bounced from one foot to the other. “But I am ready now.” Patience nodded. “Waiting is hardest when we are ready.”

ART: Impatience bouncing; Patience steady but not motionless.
PAGE 04

Can we make it faster?

Impatience reached toward the gate. “Maybe if we push—” “Stop,” said Patience. “Red flag means wait.” Impatience pulled both hands back. “I hate waiting.” “You can hate it and still wait safely.”

ART: Strong visual boundary at gate; hands remain outside machinery. Red flag prominent.
PAGE 05

A waiting job

Patience looked around. “Let us choose a waiting job.” “A what?” “Something small we can do while time moves.” Impatience frowned. “Time should move faster.” Patience smiled. “It never listens to me either.”

ART: Comic clock face ignoring both characters.
PAGE 06

Count the horses

Their first waiting job was counting carousel animals. One rocket horse. Two dragons. Three dolphins. Four striped zebras. Impatience reached ten, then whispered, “I forgot I was waiting for a minute.”

ART: Counting spread with ten distinct ride animals.
PAGE 07

Still red

They checked the flag. Still red. “Now what?” Impatience groaned. Patience shrugged. “Another waiting job.” They found five round stones and built a tiny tower beside the line.

ART: Stone tower safely away from walking path; red flag visible in background.
PAGE 08

Waiting breaks

“Do waiting jobs make the ride open?” asked Impatience. “No,” said Patience. “They help us handle the waiting.” Impatience thought about that. “So patience is not magic?” “Definitely not magic.”

ART: Honest explanation; no magical sparkles around patience.
PAGE 09

Ask for an update

After a while, Impatience asked the mechanic, “Is there an update?” The mechanic smiled. “Good question. I fixed one part. I need to test one more.” Impatience nodded. Knowing more helped.

ART: Mechanic shows two simple check boxes: FIXED and TESTING.
PAGE 10

One more job

Patience suggested cloud shapes. Impatience found a pancake cloud, a boot cloud, and one that looked exactly like Grumpiness before breakfast. They both laughed. Then they checked the flag again.

ART: Cloud-shape spread with playful Grumpiness cameo silhouette.
PAGE 11

Yellow

The mechanic changed the flag from red to yellow. “Almost ready. Please stay behind the line.” Impatience gasped. “Yellow! That is closer to green!” “Yes,” Patience said. “And yellow still means wait.”

ART: Clear colour transition; line boundary and safe waiting position obvious.
PAGE 12

The hardest minute

The last minute felt longer than all the others. Impatience squeezed both hands together. “I want to run through the gate.” Patience said, “Tell your feet: not yet.” “Not yet,” Impatience told them.

ART: Close-up on feet behind line; speech bubble directed toward shoes.
PAGE 13

Green

The mechanic tested the brakes, checked the bars, and finally lifted a green flag. “Safe to ride!” Impatience jumped straight up. “NOW?” “Now,” said Patience. They entered together.

ART: Big green-flag reveal, mechanic completing safety checklist.
PAGE 14

The rocket horse

Impatience climbed onto the silver rocket horse. Patience chose a blue dragon beside it. The music started. Up, down, around they went. “Worth the wait?” Patience called. “Ask me after three more circles!”

ART: Full kinetic carousel spread; joy without implying delay itself was desirable.
PAGE 15

Patience is an action

When the ride stopped, Impatience said, “I thought patience meant doing nothing.” Patience shook their head. “Sometimes patience means waiting safely, finding something useful, asking for an update, and trying again.”

ART: Four icon recap: safety line, activity, question, green flag.
PAGE 16

Not yet is not never

That evening, the twin buses rolled toward the next carnival. Impatience looked out the window and smiled. “I still do not like waiting.” Patience smiled back. “You do not have to like it to know how.”

ART: Closing bus panorama; tiny carousel behind them, green flag lowered for the night.
EMOTIONAL-LEARNING LAYER

Patience is not doing nothing.

Adult/educator note: The story separates patience from passive obedience. It models safe boundaries, useful waiting activities, requesting information, tolerating uncertainty, and recognizing that “not yet” is different from “never.”

  1. Why did the mechanic use the red flag?
  2. What was a “waiting job”?
  3. Did the waiting jobs make the repair faster?
  4. What did yellow mean?
  5. What can you do when waiting feels hard?

Front-cover treatment

Patience and Impatience stand at the carousel gate under a giant circular canopy. The silver rocket horse is visible behind them while a red flag, yellow flag and green flag form a small visual sequence around the title.

Series lockup: EMOJI CARNIVAL — BOOK 06

Authors: E. H. Ackerman & J. D. Ackerman

Back-cover treatment

The carousel circle continues around the back with four icons: WAIT SAFELY, FIND A JOB, ASK FOR AN UPDATE, TRY AGAIN.

Copy: Impatience is ready to ride right now—but the carousel is not. With one red flag and the slowest minute ever, Patience shows that waiting can be an action, not just empty time.
