Cold desert. Thin air. Giant volcanoes. Ancient river clues. ARQSI and ARQSA cross the red frontier to learn why a dry planet can still carry a record of water.

Age-band production: written specifically for ages 6–9 as a visual science-adventure comic. Dialogue, terrain maps, rover-scale comparisons and fact cards share the narrative load. This Mars issue advances the Solar System story rather than recycling the Earth manuscript.

OPENING SIGNAL

“Dry does not mean never wet.”

Mars rolls into view, rust-red with a white polar cap. ARQSA: “No blue oceans.” ARQSI: “Not now.”

Why Mars is red

The ship samples the atmosphere. ARQSI: “Very thin. Mostly carbon dioxide, with nitrogen and argon.”

ARQSA watches heat escape after sunset. “Thin air does not hold warmth like Earth’s atmosphere.”

What readers should leave knowing

  • Mars looks red largely because iron minerals in its surface materials oxidized, producing rusty iron oxides.
  • Mars has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide, plus nitrogen and argon.
  • Olympus Mons is the largest known volcano in the Solar System, and Valles Marineris is an enormous canyon system.
  • Ancient valleys, deltas, lakebeds and water-altered minerals show that liquid water played a major role in Mars’s past.
  • Water still exists on Mars mainly as ice; stable liquid water is difficult on the present-day surface.
  • Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos.
  • Evidence that an environment was habitable is not the same as proof that life existed there.

Character continuity

ARQSI remains analytical and cautious with claims. ARQSA drives questions about evidence and scale. Their growing attachment to Earth remains subtle; Mars briefly becomes a comparison point rather than a new home.

Visual production system

Palette: iron red, burnt orange, charcoal, ice white. Use orbit-to-surface scale transitions repeatedly. Scientific diagrams must be labelled when not to scale. Do not depict breathable air, open modern rivers or confirmed Martian organisms.

Science verification note

Fact layer is based on NASA Mars reference material covering atmosphere, Olympus Mons, Valles Marineris, ancient water evidence, present water ice and robotic exploration. Final retail proof still requires dedicated science QA.
